Mombasa to Lamu - Flights, Buses, Distance & the Final Boat Crossing

Is Lamu in Mombasa?

No - they're separate counties on Kenya's coast. Mombasa is the country's main coastal city and port; Lamu is a separate archipelago and county further northeast, best known for Lamu Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two are often mentioned together simply because both sit on the coast, but getting from one to the other is a real journey, not a short hop across town.

How Far Is Lamu From Mombasa?

By air, Mombasa and Lamu are about 275 km apart. By road, the driving distance to Mokowe - the mainland jetty you use to reach Lamu Island is closer to 320–340 km, since the route runs up through Malindi, Garsen and Witu rather than in a straight line.

Mombasa to Lamu Flights

Flying is the fastest way to cover the distance which about 40 to 50 minutes in the air. Jambojet and Skyward Express run scheduled daily flights, with Kenya Airways also connecting via partner carriers. Fares vary widely by how far ahead you book and the airline, roughly from the $50s up to $150+ one way. If you're chasing mombasa to lamu cheap flights, booking a few weeks out and comparing Jambojet against Skyward Express directly on their own sites usually beats third-party aggregators.

Flights land at Manda Airport (LAU) on Manda Island — from there, you'll still need a short boat across to Lamu Island itself (see our Manda Airport transfer guide for that leg).

Mombasa to Lamu Bus

For travelers on a budget or who want to see the coast overland, buses are the main option. Tawakal Coaches and Najaah run the route with a handful of daily departures, taking roughly 6 to 9 hours depending on road conditions, with fares typically in the $9–$20 range. The bus route runs via Malindi, Garsen and Witu, ending at Mokowe jetty on the mainland - not on Lamu Island itself.

A few practical notes if you're booking a bus:

  • Buses depart during daylight hours only. Public service vehicles on the Lamu–Witu–Garsen stretch operate under a long-standing daytime travel restriction, so there are no overnight departures on this route.
  • Book an express service where possible as fewer stops means a noticeably shorter, more comfortable ride.
  • Ask for a front seat if you're prone to motion sickness; sections of the route can be bumpy.

Mombasa to Lamu Road: What to Expect

The road is now largely tarmacked, a big improvement on years past, though some stretches near Gamba and Witu are prone to flooding in heavy rains, occasionally disrupting travel. If you're driving yourself rather than taking a scheduled coach, build in extra time and check current road conditions before you set off, since the route can close temporarily after storms.

Is There a Ferry From Mombasa to Lamu?

Not directly. There's no scheduled passenger ship running the full distance between Mombasa and Lamu. What travelers usually mean by "the Lamu ferry" is the short public boat crossing at the very end of the road journey: once your bus reaches Mokowe jetty on the mainland, you transfer to a boat for the final 15–30 minutes across the channel to Lamu Town.

Three options at that crossing:

  • A shared public boat, cheapest but slower, waiting to fill up before departing
  • A shared speedboat, taking about 15 minutes once full
  • A private speedboat, quickest and most flexible, for a higher fare

Separately, Lamu Port — Kenya's newer deep-water port under the LAPSSET corridor — does have a regular vessel schedule, but that's for cargo and container ships, not passenger travel, so it's not relevant if you're planning your own trip.

Mombasa to Lamu Port Traffic

If you've come across mentions of "Mombasa Lamu port traffic," this refers to cargo vessel movements between Kenya's two commercial seaports — Mombasa (the country's main gateway) and Lamu Port (the newer deep-water facility built for the LAPSSET corridor). It's shipping and trade activity, not a passenger route, so travelers don't need to factor it into trip planning.
