Best Time to Visit Lamu, Kenya

Lamu Island doesn't run on the same clock as the rest of Kenya's coast - no cars, tide-timed boat crossings, and a climate with real seasonal swings. Here's what actually shapes a good trip: when to go, how long to stay, what to expect from the weather, and honest answers to the questions most first-time visitors have before they book.

Best Time to Visit Lamu

December to March - short dry season. Hot, sunny, and humid, with very little rain. This is peak season for a reason: excellent water visibility for snorkeling, diving, and dhow sailing. December itself is lively, with a festive-season buzz; January and February settle into a quieter, more laid-back beach stretch.

July to September - long dry season. Cooler and breezy, with lower humidity, thanks to the Kusi trade winds. The sea can be a touch choppier, but the more comfortable temperatures make this a popular window for pairing a mainland safari with a few days on the coast.

April to June and November - rainy seasons. Humidity climbs and rainfall picks up, peaking around April and May. This is Lamu's quietest stretch — green, calm, and noticeably cheaper on accommodation — though some boat trips and outdoor activities get scaled back when the rain is heaviest.

Festivals worth timing your trip around:

  • Lamu Cultural Festival (November): Dhow races, donkey races, and traditional Swahili poetry — the town's biggest cultural event of the year. The donkey and dhow races are sometimes handled randomly throughout the year. Contact us to learn more about any upcoming events within your travel schedule.
  • Maulid Festival (dates vary, usually mid-year): Traditional music, stick dances, and lively community processions marking the Prophet's birthday.
  • Lamu Yoga Festival: Usually happens around October annually

How Many Days Do You Need in Lamu?

  • 3 to 4 days - the sweet spot for most visitors. Enough time to properly explore Lamu Old Town, spend a day in Shela Village, and take a dhow sailing trip.
  • 5 to 7 days - ideal if you want genuine relaxation, plus room for a nearby island excursion, a cooking class, or simply doing very little.
  • 1 to 2 days - workable but rushed. Getting to and from Manda Airport, plus the boat crossing, eats into a short stay more than people expect.

Is Lamu Dangerous?

This is a fair question, and worth answering honestly rather than glossing over. Lamu County includes some mainland areas near the Somali border that foreign governments do advise caution around, due to occasional activity linked to militant groups operating in that border region. However, Lamu Island and Manda Island themselves are treated differently - most current travel advisories exclude the islands from their warnings, and the standard guidance is simply to fly in rather than travel by road, since the mainland route (Mombasa or Malindi to Mokowe) passes through the areas of greater concern.

In practice, this is why nearly every visitor reaches Lamu by air. Once you're on the island, day-to-day safety concerns are the ordinary ones of any low-key tourist destination - reasonable street awareness, especially at night, and normal caution with belongings on the boats and jetties.

Lamu Weather

Lamu has a warm, tropical monsoon climate year-round, with daytime temperatures typically in the high 20s to mid-30s°C (mid-80s to low 90s°F) and rarely a genuinely cool day. Humidity is the bigger factor than temperature swings — it climbs noticeably during the April–June and November rains, and drops during the July–September dry season when the Kusi winds pick up.

For a 10-day forecast, check a live weather app closer to your travel dates rather than relying on seasonal averages — Lamu's coastal weather can shift day to day, especially near the shoulder seasons.

How to Get to Lamu Island

Every route into Lamu ends the same way: land at Manda Airport, then take a short boat across the channel to Lamu Island itself (or a resort transfer if you're staying on Manda Island).

How many hours from Mombasa to Lamu?

  • By air: roughly 40–50 minutes, with daily scheduled flights.
  • By road: 6–9 hours by bus to Mokowe jetty on the mainland, plus a final 15–30 minute boat crossing.

How many hours from Nairobi to Lamu?

  • By air: about 1 hour 15–20 minutes, flying direct from either JKIA (Jambojet) or Wilson Airport (Safarilink).
  • By road: not recommended as a standalone route — it's a long overland haul via Mombasa or Malindi before the same final boat crossing, and flying is both faster and the generally advised option.

How far is Malindi from Lamu?

  • By air: about 136 km, a 25–40 minute flight, though frequencies are limited (often just a couple of flights a week), so book ahead.
  • By road: around 224 km, roughly 5–6 hours by car via Garsen and Witu.

Best Beaches in Lamu

  • Shela Beach — Lamu's signature beach, a long stretch of sand backed by dunes, a short walk or boat ride from Shela Village.
  • Manda Island beaches — quieter, less developed stretches near Ras Kitau Bay, popular with guests staying at resorts on Manda itself.
  • Kizingoni and the dunes beyond Shela — worth the walk for travelers who want an emptier stretch of sand, particularly at sunset.
