Lamu Old Town Walking Tour
Lamu Old Town isn't the kind of place you "see" from a checklist, it's a maze of coral-stone lanes, carved wooden doors, and daily life that has barely changed in centuries. A good Lamu city tour is about someone who grew up in these streets showing you what you'd otherwise walk straight past.
Why Lamu Old Town Is Worth a Guided Tour
Lamu Old Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, recognized as the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa - a town founded in the 14th century that's still lived in, not preserved behind glass. Its narrow, shaded streets were built for foot and donkey traffic long before cars existed, and that's still exactly how they function today. A guide matters here because so much of what makes Lamu special isn't signposted: which doorway carvings mark a merchant's house, why certain buildings face the sea a certain way, or which alley leads to the best view of the waterfront at sunset.
What Your Lamu Old Town Walking Tour Covers
A typical guided walk through Lamu Old Town takes in:
- Lamu Fort — built between 1813 and 1821 under the Sultan of Pate with Omani support, later used as a colonial-era prison, and now a museum and library
- Lamu Museum — one of the most complete collections of Swahili and coastal culture anywhere on the coast, including the island's ceremonial siwa horn
- The carved Swahili doors — some of the finest examples of Swahili woodwork on the coast, each one telling you something about the wealth or trade of the family who once lived behind it
- Riyadha Mosque and the old town's mosques — a glimpse into Lamu's centuries-old role as a centre of Islamic scholarship on the coast
- The covered market — busy, photogenic, and one of the best places to see everyday Lamu life up close
- The waterfront (Corniche) — where dhows still load and unload cargo much as they have for generations, and the best spot to end the walk as the light softens
Sample Lamu Town Tour Itinerary
- Morning: Meet your guide at the waterfront, walk through the market and into the old town's narrow lanes
- Mid-morning: Lamu Fort, followed by Lamu Museum
- Late morning: Swahili doors, Riyadha Mosque exterior, and a walk through the old residential quarter
- Midday: Wrap up along the Corniche, with time to stop for Swahili coffee or a seafood lunch nearby
Most guided walks run around 2 to 3 hours, though we can extend the route for guests who want more time in the museums or the market.

What to Know Before You Go
Lamu is a predominantly Muslim town with a strong sense of tradition, so modest dress is expected - shoulders and knees covered for both men and women. Wear comfortable, closed shoes; the coral-stone streets aren't kind to sandals, and yes, you will need to watch your step around the town's donkeys.
Lamu Tour Guide: Why Book With Us
